The harsh reality of the Northern winter can certainly make a person dream. When the snow crunches under your feet and the biting wind hits your body like a freight train, thoughts can easily wander to the warm days ahead of us. Maybe that’s envisioning a hike on a sunny day or a round of golf in perfect conditions. Like many Canadians, that mental picture is all about relaxing in our backyards. For those people, the surroundings require the ideal accessories – a patio set that suits your exact needs.
There’s a definite trend in that market. Canadians have shown a desire to invest in high-quality patio furniture to make their summer days as comfortable as possible. Jon Nameth has seen this firsthand. The owner of Fine Oak Things in Milton, Ont carries two specific brands of outdoor furniture in LuxCraft and Beaver Springs. Both are incredibly durable products, made from recycled material and coming with lifetime guarantees
“The demand has skyrocketed,” Nameth says of his customers’ tendency to spend their money on a quality set.
Nameth took over Fine Oak Things in 2017. The business has a long-standing reputation for its impeccable Mennonite solid wood furniture and Nameth has built on that tradition by focusing on exceptional customer service. The goal is to tailor purchases to what the customer wants and needs as opposed to trying to force a sale on them. There is a trust that’s built.
Something interesting happened on the sales front beginning in 2020, which coincides with the start of the pandemic. In 2020, the company set a record for sales. And just four months into 2021, Fine Oak Things had already eclipsed the entire total of that previous year.
“There hasn’t been as much travel,” says Nameth, who has heard the term “staycation” more and more in the last couple of years. “People are taking this opportunity to invest in their backyards. The focus has been on quality. Consumers are tired of buying cheaper products that fall apart and need to be replaced regularly. And they want their backyard to be nice so they can have family and friends over for an outdoor gathering. That’s why you spend your money on quality.”
It makes sense. Nameth’s patio furniture brands have several style and durability features that appeal to the customer looking for something special. Beaver Springs is a Canadian supplier with an impressive line of products. They feature three-quarter-inch, high-density Polywood for their chairs. Known for their unique modern style, they make for a perfect fit in either a city or country setting.
Fine Oak Things is the exclusive Canadian supplier for LuxCraft, a US-based company with an incredible reputation for quality. The brand features a wide array of colour options, including choices that look like wood but are crafted with durable recyclable material.
Both brands, which can be shipped to any location across Canada, provide a customer with peace of mind.
“You invest once,” says Nameth. “Basically, you never have to touch them – you can leave them outside all year round. You don’t have that frustration of trying to store the furniture in a shed for the winter. The lifetime warranty basically means that other than damage you have done yourself, anything like scratches or bumps will be covered.
“These products are also great for the environment. Each Deluxe Adirondack Chair, for example, weighs about 62 pounds and that translates to over 500 plastic jugs being removed from the landfill.”
The increasing demand for these high-quality lines at Fine Oak Things means customers have to get an early jump. Before the pandemic, the lead time for an order was about two to four weeks. But with more consumers wanting to invest in better patio furniture, and the supply chain being impacted, orders need to be placed months in advance to ensure that they will be enjoying a relaxing summer in the backyard. It may be frigid and snowy but the time to prepare for that beautiful weather is now.
“The sooner people order this year, the better,” Nameth says.
Maintenance Tips
LuxCraft and Beaver Springs patio furniture sets are both beautiful and durable. To maintain their quality, take care in cleaning.
Use a garden hose on the highest setting or with a spray nozzle
CLR and Simply Clean are safe products to use
Hardware parts are stainless steel so no need to worry about rust
Let accumulated snow melt off naturally when the weather warms as opposed to brushing
If using a pressure washer, to avoid fraying, adhere to the Rule of 12 (no more than 1200 psi and no closer than 12 inches)
